What is a SHE-SPACE?

A SHE-SPACE is a safe zone and a sanctuary for women. It is a haven that gendered violence, discrimination, and threats do not penetrate.

Here at Lotus Sky we LOVE sharing with you the beautiful parts of Nepal, our creative process, our studio, and the tremendous pride we take in our craft.

That said, we also believe that we have a responsibility as a social enterprise to not only prioritize people above profits, but to also ensure that our customers are transparently informed about the WHY behind our core values and the decisions that we make.

In Nepal, so beautiful and rich in many respects, we nevertheless must acknowledge the extreme issues facing women and girls. With a strong patriarchal country and prevalent gender discrimination and violence, we realized early into our journey the importance of making a statement with a 100% woman run and operated model.

A close inspection of nearly every other similar bracelet company in Nepal, not to mention nearly every business in general, has a man positioned at the very top as the founder or owner. And while it is imperative that men serve in the women's empowerment movement, when men are the ONLY leaders in a movement that strives to give voice to women, there is a gap in the narrative that must be addressed.

Empowerment entails way more than the creation of jobs by men for women. Empowerment entails the creation of new leaders, culture, safety and tells stories that are all too often hidden.

When men almost always serve as leaders in every realm, it can be difficult for girls and young women to imagine possibilities for themselves. We made a bold choice to ensure that every single position was occupied by a Lotus Sky woman. This was an incredibly challenging feat and came with many hurdles that slowed the business side of our social enterprise down substantially.

However, a vision of equality and safety must be shown as a real possibility, not just a pipe dream.

At some point, that first step must be taken and it is for this reason that we are and will continue to be a SHE-SPACE.
